At BizCover, our mission extends beyond offering easy and affordable insurance solutions. We’re also dedicated to uplifting small business owners, who are the backbone of the Australian economy. For artists like Rebecca Palmer, their craft not only brings beauty into the world but also inspires those around them.
The $5,000 BizGiver grant is awarded to better the lives of small business owners and facilitate growth through a product or service. With hundreds of applications this round, the decision was anything but easy. As part of our selection process, we encouraged applicants to share their unique business journey, and how the grant could transform their small business. Their stories were heard by the community and supported via public votes. We then shared our finalists’ stories with our staff and invited everyone to vote for who they think should receive the grant.
We are excited to announce Rebecca Palmer as the latest recipient of the BizGiver grant. Rebecca’s request for an iPad and projector highlights her commitment to expanding her mural projects and enhancing her artistic workflow. We believe in supporting the dreams of small business owners like Rebecca and are proud to play a part in her journey.
We had the opportunity to chat with Rebecca about her journey, her passion for art, and how the BizGiver grant has impacted her business. Here’s her story.
Why did you start your business?
I have always enjoyed being creative, finding inspiration from our natural environment. When I had children, I enjoyed having projects I could leave and come back to. So while juggling caring for young kids, I kept on painting, and having consistent arts practice evolved to this, with it beginning around 7 years ago. I now know this is what I want to do for my career.
Why did you enter the BizGiver competition?
I was in the market for insurance and came across the competition. A goal I had was to do more murals in 2024. I had already completed a mural by designing it on my phone and putting it on the wall by hand and it was a long process, so I thought a great business wish to help my goal for more mural projects would be a iPad for procreate and a projector to project the image.
What does being a small business owner mean to you?
It means working hard to live your dream while creating opportunities that add value to the community and to your own state of being, by doing daily what you’re passionate about and gives you life.
Why do you love your job?
I am happiest when I am painting. I see the world in colours and patterns, and there is something about bringing a new vision to life that is very satisfying, for myself and my clients. I love sharing the love of art as well through teaching art and seeing others enjoy the process in what they create.
How will winning this prize help your business?
As an emerging artist, to have someone invest in me with practical equipment is immeasurably helpful, as it equips me with tools to get the job done faster and more efficiently, which will help with sales and profits as I build up my business.
Where do you see your business in 5 years’ time? What are your growth goals?
In 5 years’ time, I see myself as a mid-career/professional artist with my business having consistent murals and even a silo painting completed. I see my brand being clear and my style being formed and clarified. I see myself having a toolkit of a variety of workshops for the community.
What are the biggest challenges your business faces?
As an emerging artist, it is creating murals in a quick timeframe, as when the design and implementation of the artwork take too long, this throws out other planned projects.
Will winning the award help?
Yes, as I learn the procreate program my design process will be a lot faster. And with the projector, getting the design up onto the wall in a quick timeframe will make it all a lot smoother.
What have been your biggest achievements?
In 2023, being chosen from Regional South Australia to attend Nebula in Adelaide through Country Arts SA for 3 days for visual artists that included, workshops, forums, talks, and networking opportunities. In 2023 also, receiving a Rowan Ramsey award for going the extra mile for volunteering in our school community. And being chosen to win this Bizcover business wish from participants from around Australia was the icing on the cake 🙂
