Once your training or education is complete, it’s time to apply for your concreting licence. This process can slightly differ based on your state or territory.

How to get a concreting licence in Victoria

Upon securing the necessary qualifications or experience, you must register and apply for your concreting licence with the Victorian Building Authority (VBA). The VBA will review your qualifications and experience to determine whether you have the knowledge and skills to carry out the work you are applying for.

How to get a concreting licence in Queensland

First, visit the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) website or their offices for the necessary application forms and checklists. Choose from one of the three licence classes, depending on your job role:

  • Contractor Licence: Enables concreters to advertise their services and manage contracts and a team of workers.
  • Nominee Supervisor Licence: Required for professionals working within a company, to oversee concreting tasks.

Site Supervisor Licence: Necessary for individuals working for contractors, to efficiently manage project sites.

How to get a concreting licence in New South Wales

In New South Wales, concreters and concrete pump operators working on construction and building sites require permits if they’re working on projects valued at $1,000 or more. You will need to register if your job includes tasks like:

  • Concrete laying or placement
  • Erecting falsework/formwork
  • Resurfacing concrete
  • Conducting exposed aggregate work
  • Undertaking concrete stencilling
  • Building concrete retaining walls
  • Executing concrete repairs
  • Preparing excavation sites for general concreting.

To get a concreting license in NSW, you will need to complete a recognised course and gain at least two years of relevant work experience. Then, you will need to fill out and submit an application form to NSW Fair Trading. If approved, you’ll receive your licence.

How to get a concreting licence in South Australia

In South Australia, the Consumer and Business Services is the governing body responsible for the licensing and registration of concreting professionals. Tradespeople in the building and construction industry have to have a valid building supervisor or building contractor licence, which determines the kind of tasks they are qualified to perform, such as concreting, steel fixing or paving concrete floors.

How to get a concreting licence in Western Australia

In Western Australia, you do not need a licence to perform work as a concreter if you’re employed by a registered builder. However, if you want to contract with others in construction work amounting to $20,000 or more, then you will require a license from the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety.

Concreters have two primary licences to choose from:

  • Building practitioner licence: Allows individuals to undertake building projects or function as a nominated building supervisor.
  • Building contractor licence: Allows individuals to create contracts, nominate supervisors, and bring subcontractors onboard.

How to get a concreting licence in Tasmania

In Tasmania, the Department of Justice is in charge of issuing concreting licences and accreditation. To get accredited, you’ll need to prove your capabilities, but you aren’t required to hold formal qualifications or certifications.
